Joe Rogan: Man of the Hour

Monday, December 10th, 2007

We all love him… well, not all. Some prefer to love to hate him, as did I, before I actually really heard what he had to say out of the spotlight. He’s the co-host of UFC (I can’t even remember whatever the other dude’s name is), he’s a comedian, he was that guy that hosted Fear Factor, and until recently, I’ve discovered that he’s that famous blogger.

Joe Rogan, the Gaian sensation, is a very unique character. Once you see him on TV, you think he’s a total tool, but when you check out his blog (at http://www.joerogan.net/), he’s amazing. Seriously, whenever I listen to him comment on any UFC fight (yes, he’s a commentator too), he sounds like he’s taken it up the ass one too many times by Randy Couture. Then, when he was a host on Fear Factor, he just seemed like a gross man who was funny at times. However, I now know differently…

Honestly, I had a love/hate relationship with Joe until I looked at his blog. For example… you know how you used to think his loud voice was violently obnoxious? Well, now I see it in a different light: whenever I’m at a bar watching a UFC event, and whenever everyone’s screaming like a bunch of rampant gypsies (they honestly scream like gypsies each time their favourite guy takes down the opponent), I can always count on hearing one man: Joe  Rogan. Whenever I hear him acting like he’s been screwed over by Randy, I just can’t help but find it humorous. Joe’s just that kind of guy once you get to see the more personal side of him.  I’m loving this guy now!

Lastly, as a treat, here’s Joe Rogan’s reaction to the infamous “2Girls1Cup” video, and his friend’s reaction to the BME Pain Olympics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhevNN1BDnQ

A Girl’s Best Friend

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

The old cliche “Man’s best friend” is so true - dogs will always listen to us, be there for us when we need a hug and won’t complain if you forget to buy them a birthday present. However, it is nice to treat our beloved pets once in a while and now Juicy Couture has created a new line just for this - Juicy Crittoure.
The luxury line for dogs includes “shampooch”, fur conditioner, doggy house spray, nail pawlish, cleansing pawlettes and of course, Eau de Pawfum (1 oz. retails for $60.)

You can also buy gift packs, such as the “Dog Posh Pooch” set which includes shampooch, conditioner and a doggy brush for $55.

Rock on!!

Weekend Fun

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

The lazy days of summer are officially over. No longer can one spend a whole day on YouTube and eating a bag of marshmallows. Free time is simply too precious now. With Friday nights always booked up, and Sunday nights marked the unofficial homework time, it is important to make the most of the small free parts of the weekend.

Fall is when there are the most opportunities to be outside, because the weather is cool, but not too cold. It’s perfect for bike-riding and walking.

Saturday nights are always fun, out with friends, et cetera, but usually Saturday afternoon is an empty timeslot. After all, who does homework on a Saturday? So round up your friends and have a picnic in the park a la elementary school! Pack easy, fun foods like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, grapes, and brownies. Afterwards, take funny pictures on the slides and swings.

Don’t feel like going out? Host a TV show night! Rent a favorite TV show, order pizza, make some popcorn, and have a marathon. Can’t decide on a TV show? The Office and Friends are universal favorites.

Have a scavenger hunt! Get a big group of friends together, come up with a random list of objects, and divide into teams. The team to find all of the objects first wins, and the losing teams buy dinner!

Check out some art. After your gallery walk, check out a local café for a coffee, tea, or smoothie.

Even though summer is greatly missed, and taking time totally for granted was an amazing luxury, entertaining weekends still exist! So enjoy school as much as possible, make the most of your weekend, and take pleasure in the thought that summer is only…eight months away!

Dorm Walls are Boring Walls

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

If I remember correctly, the excitement of moving into the dorm is ruined by the whitest, brightest, most boring walls… ever! There are many cute solutions to this that won’t be against any dorm’s rules. Most dorm halls have rules that prohibit nails, screws, and paint. There are some exceptions though.

Wall decals are pretty cool for adding some fun to a wall. They’re vinyl designs that stick on walls. They peel away when you’re done using them. So, you could change them throughout the year, or leave a design up all year round. WhatIsBlik.com is my favorite place to shop for wall decals.

Another route would be to get a tapestry. Tapestries are usually thin pieces of cloth with pretty designs. They look nice on walls (with tacks or strong tape if tacks aren’t allowed). Some people, however, do use them for other things. The tapestry shown (from Target) is shown as a bedspread and sofa cover.

There’s always the classic solution… Posters! My walls were eventually filled with posters. I ordered lots of posters from PosterCheckOut.com and created the “Andy Warhol Wall”. I also had a wall of posters I ‘borrowed’ from the dorm lobby.

Have fun decorating those boring, bland, white walls.

PURE bars.

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

My latest obsession: Pure bars. Made in my home state of Michigan, these bars are totally raw, and contain no preservatives or artificial anything. They are certified organic, kosher, and vegan, along with containing 1.5 servings of fruit per bar. They are not made with any gluten, dairy, or GMO’s.

This isn’t your typical nutrition bar, either. Unlike sugary brands like Luna, Pure bars actually leave you satisfied (and this is coming from someone that snacks constantly)! A Pure bar is perfect for a snack on the go, or, if really pressed for time, two bars can make for a healthy alternative to say, a fast food meal.

You may find the delicious bars to be a bit pricey, a little over $2 for a 1.7 oz. bar, but seriously, you get what you pay for. These bars taste amazing and are really an awesome healthy snack. Plus, there is a discounted price to buy a pack of 12 vs. individual bars at a store. My favorite flavor? Apple Cinnamon! While flavors like Wild Blueberry, ChocChip Trail Mix, and [my second favorite] Cranberry Orange are typically always available at health food stores, the three “main” flavors are Apple Cinnamon, Chocolate Brownie, and Cherry Cashew.

Check out www.thepurebar.com, the official Pure bar site to learn more and purchase. All varieties are available on www.thepurebar.com. The three main flavors are available on www.amazon.com.

Happy eating!

Although most of us prefer cotton for its comfort and durability, the fact of the matter is, cotton is hurting our environment. For example, only 3% of farmland is used for commercial cotton production, but cotton guzzles up an astonishing 25% of pesticides and fertilizers used in agriculture. Chemicals from these can run off into streams, lakes and oceans and endanger not only animals but ourselves.

What can we do about it? Find an alternative! Organic cotton doesn’t use chemicals in the production and meets strict guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture — and can make for some really cute clothes! Brands like Bono’s Edun use organic cotton and help reduce poverty in Africa. Below is a cute top, available at Nordstrom, made of organic cotton and for a good cause — money will be donated to the World Wildlife Fund for every shirt sold.

Another chic and easy way to help the earth is to recycle — clothing, that is! Buying vintage or used not only gives you a unique look on the cheap, but stops more clothing from being made, worn and thrown away. I love Adore Vintage for cute vintage and sometimes designer threads, along with Plato’s Closet and my local thrift stores.

Bring Your Own Bag

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Each year, billions of plastic bags end up as litter. Lots of marine animals die from eating them. Plastic bags photograde and that contaminates the world’s soil and waterways. Bringing sturdy, reusable eco-friendly bags along on shopping trips can help lessen the effects of using plastic bags. Any non-plastic bag can be used for the cause, but some companies are making bags specifically for shopping.

Some stores are already trying to help. Steve Madden stores give out a reusable non-plastic bag. I use mine for clothes on sleepovers and such. Ikea’s also doing their part. They now charge for throwaway bags and lessened the price of reusable bags. The proceeds from the throwaways go to the American Forests charity. Ikea’s goal is to get all of their customers to switch to their reusable, biodegradable bags.

You can buy eco-friendly, reusable shopping bags from Envirosax, ReusableBags.com, or to get the pictured grocery tote visit Fred Flare.
