Not enough room for two music Queens?

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

Whoa. Aretha Franklin is apparently upset with Beyonce for referring to Tina Turner as “the Queen” before their joint performance at the Grammy Awards last Sunday.

Does she really care that much? Franklin rants afterward: “”I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonce. However, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy.”

Seriously? Pretty sure SHE is bringing on the controversy.

My point of view? Step aside Aretha and Tina, for Beyonce’s reign as queen has begun.

American Idol Scandal!

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Allegedly finalist Carly Smithson–formerly Carly Hennessy–already had a record deal and even sold a couple hundred copies of an album.

Ultimate High was released in stores nationwide three months ago. So far, it has sold only 378 copies–amounting to about $4,900 at its suggested retail price….The story of MCA and Ms. Hennessy shows the dysfunctional economics of the music industry at work. MCA, one of Universal Music’s major labels, initially hooked up with the spunky teenager three years ago because it was trying to get a piece of the great success competitors enjoyed with young pop artists like Britney Spears and ‘N Sync. Ms. Hennessy, a native of Dublin, had released her debut musical effort, Carly’s Christmas Album, in Ireland at age 10, after performing all over Europe as Little Cosette in Les Miserables. At 13, she was named the Irish national spokesmodel for the Denny sausage brand. Soon, she and her family began hoping for much more, and Ms. Hennessy dropped out of high school…”

And the rest is history: moved to America, became a finalist on our country’s “American Idol”.

But a music career and record deal? Totally against ‘Idol’ rules!!

Hmmm. Wonder what Simon thinks…

“The Hottie and the Nottie”: I am embarrassed for her.

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Everyone’s favorite heiress is at it again.

No, a sex tape didn’t surface and she didn’t get arrested for drunk driving (although her little brother Barron did earlier this week…). Paris’ latest big screen adventure premiered last week, although in “limited” theatres/locations.

The film is titled “The Hottie and the Nottie”, and Paris plays Christabel Abbott.

“Nate moves to L.A. to track down Cristabel, the woman he’s been in love with since childhood, only to discover that his plan to woo her only has one hurdle to overcome: what to do with June, Cristabel’s ever-present, not-so-hot best friend? What’s even more complicating is Nate’s growing feelings for June, whose true beauty starts to emerge.”

Blah blah blah. We are bored already. What a flop. Poor Paris.

Cashmere Mafia: Are you in or out?

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

ABC’s latest drama-filled series, “Cashmere Mafia”, is making a splash with fans of “Sex and the City”, “The Devil Wears Prada”, and other glamorous programs.

The series follows four incredibly successful (and incredibly dressed!) Manhattan women. Lucy Liu, Frances O’Connor, Miranda Otto, and Bonnie Somerville star in the show, which airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on ABC.

Stylist and Oscar nominee for costume design (in “The Devil Wears Prada”) Patricia Fields, and was behind Sex and the City is now working on Cashmere Mafia.

“It’s totally a mixture of designers knocking on our door or us going to see someone and requesting,” Patricia is quoted, regarding the ties between television and the fashion industry.

As to the show as a whole: “Cashmere Mafia” is great for a light, pick-me-up drama, and the clothes are way fun, but it isn’t quite as addicting as our old “Sex and the City”.

Are we going to continue watching?

Of course. Who knows? It may blow up into something huge, and we certainly must witness that.

Catch tonight’s episode at ten.

Grammy Highlights: Hit the right or wrong note?

Monday, February 11th, 2008

There were several surprises and shockers in the 50th annual Grammy Awards. Of course, the performance everyone was looking forward to did, after much questioning, happen. You know the one I mean. The ever unpredictable Amy Winehouse (pictured during the performance below). Though she performed from London, she managed to score five Grammy awards!

A list of winners, nominees, and more may be found on www.grammy.com.

And of course we were all watching the red carpet! Amongst the most controversial were Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, and Beyonce.

Rihanna, who has been stirring the fashion pot lately, sported a bright blue dress with a really odd design that is making some fashionistas question her very taste!

Miley Cyrus, whom up until lately I thought of as just another tween idol, was looking all grown up at the Grammy’s, wearing loads and loads of makeup and a short, albeit age- appropriate sparkly Celine frock.

Beyonce showed off her newly blonde locks (see below). I wasn’t a fan. It just didn’t look natural! What do you think?

One thing that couldn’t go unnoticed was the behavior of our boy Kanye upon winning a Grammy. He kept ordering the prompt music to stop and proceeded (after a long speech, and my open jaw in place) to ignore his escort and walk briskly off the stage. Did NOT appreciate that diva attitude!!

It was a fun night, with appearances from Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin to Feist! The glamour of the Grammy awards is always anticipated, and this year was no exception!

sex and the city

Hey Fashionistas!

Looking for the next Devil Wears Prada movie? That perfect movie to woo you just from the fabulous fashions alone? Look no further than Darren Star’s Sex and the City movie. Styled by Patricia Field, the designer from the original series and The Devil Wears Prada, this movie is sure to please any girl looking to see a chic Manhattan movie.

Can’t get your mom to take you on another trip to wonderful New York City this year? With Sex and the City you’re already in the life of fabulous writer Carrie Bradshaw living the life of a chic Manhattan woman. Here you see the trendy foursome together in Bryant Park for a fashion show.

Thinking the movie is too boring to drag your regular friends who don’t really “get” fashion? Don’t! With plenty of action scenes in the movie including a PETA activist dumping blood on Samantha and Carrie as a runaway bride, this chick flick will keep your friends knowing what’s up and sitting on edge. Just like Patricia Field’s other notorious fashion friendly movie, Sex and the City will become a favorite of every fashionistas collection.

Nip/Tuck is Back!

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

nip / tuck

Plastic surgery drama, Nip/Tuck, has returned for the 5th season. Sean and Christian are in a new city and they’re going through new problems. In the past season, the guys worked out past issues and are pretty much working with a clean slate. Because of this, the show is completely different. There’s more comedy already. Based on the look into the season, it looks like the vast majority of the drama they will go through is going to be between the two of them.

The show is definitely going to be different than previous seasons. It’s definitely less suspenseful then say, “The Carver” era. I did love the show before, but I look forward to seeing Sean and Christian in a new way. I’ll be watching.

Guest appearances this season include Oliver Platt, Portia de Rossi, Jennifer Coolidge, Rosie O’Donnell (returning as lottery winner, Dawn Budge) and more.

Gossip Girl

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

I just had to make another post about this!

Seriously, if you have yet to watch, get going!  Although it is turning out to be pretty far from the plot lines presented in the book series, it is hot anyway!  One viewer even described it, “as good as the first season of the OC!”

Pretty crazy, right?  If you have not seen it, check out full length episodes on the CW website, or watch it in 7-10 minute segments on YouTube.  I actually find these methods more convenient than actually sitting down when the episodes air and watching the show on TV.  No commercials, and you watch when it’s a good time for you.  Oh, the wonders of the internet.

And don’t forget this week’s episode, airing 9 p.m. this Wednesday on the CW.

It is sure to be a must-see!

Peace.

cavemen have feelings too, you know.

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

Upon hearing that Geico’s caveman commercials — you know the ones — would be made into an ABC sitcom, I eagerly awaited would was sure to be a successful addition to the Tuesday night lineup.

Although the show — which airs at 8/7 central on ABC — provides a light laugh, it’s not the humor audiences will get out of it. The show follows three “cavemen” that are living among the rest of us in a modern-day San Diego, California. Joel, Nick and Andy aren’t always accepted by “sapiens”, or humans. Their Neanderthal-like looks scare children — and make viewers laugh.

Despite the fact that the original commercials were made to poke fun at today’s politically correct society, and of course, sell car insurance, the actual TV show delivers the reality check that primetime viewers may need.

My hopes? That future generations look back on past prejudices and regard them with the same hilarity of the attitudes of humans towards cavemen.

Until then, enjoy the show — and look out for the funny Carpoolers following at 8:30.
